DPF Cleaning, Assessment & Repair

Canberra’s accredited DPF Doctor specialist — we find and fix the root cause, not just the symptom

What Is a Diesel Particulate Filter?

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a critical emissions component fitted to all modern diesel vehicles. It captures soot and particulate matter from the exhaust, preventing harmful particles from entering the atmosphere. Over time, the DPF self-cleans through a process called regeneration, where trapped soot is burned off at high temperatures.

When regeneration can’t complete — due to short trips, faulty sensors, EGR valve issues, or other underlying faults — the DPF becomes blocked. This triggers a warning light on your dashboard and can lead to reduced power, increased fuel consumption, or limp mode.

At Anthony Costello Automotive, we are Canberra’s accredited DPF Doctor specialist. We don’t just clean your DPF — we diagnose and fix the underlying fault that caused it to block in the first place.

Important

If your DPF light is on, do not get a DPF clean until the underlying faults are identified and fixed.

A blocked DPF is always caused by another fault. Until you find and fix that fault, your DPF will continue to block.

Signs Your DPF May Be Blocked

Don’t ignore these warning signs — early diagnosis prevents costly damage

DPF Warning Light

A glowing or flashing DPF symbol on your dashboard is the most obvious sign. Don’t ignore it — continued driving can cause further damage.

Loss of Power

Sluggish acceleration, reduced engine power, or the vehicle entering limp mode — the ECU restricts performance to protect the engine.

Increased Fuel Consumption

A blocked DPF creates back-pressure in the exhaust system, forcing the engine to work harder and burn more fuel than normal.

Excessive Exhaust Smoke

Black or grey smoke from the exhaust on acceleration can indicate the DPF is no longer capturing soot effectively.

Frequent Regeneration Attempts

Noticing the engine running hotter than usual, a strong exhaust smell, or the stop-start system disabling frequently during short journeys.

Difficulty Starting

A severely blocked DPF increases exhaust back-pressure to the point where starting the engine becomes difficult, especially in cold conditions.

Our DPF Assessment & Cleaning Process

We follow The DPF Doctor’s industry-leading methodology — diagnose first, repair second, clean last

1
Diagnose
Full diagnostic assessment to identify the root cause of your DPF problem — not just the symptoms.
2
Inform
We explain exactly what work is required, with transparent pricing. No guesswork, no surprises.
3
Repair
Fix the underlying faults first — sensors, EGR valves, injectors, or other issues causing the blockage.
4
Clean
3-stage in-situ DPF clean if required, using specialist equipment without removing the filter from the vehicle.
5
Verify
Confirm the repair by analysing engine data, clearing fault codes, and resetting DPF counters.

What Causes a DPF to Block?

A blocked DPF is always a symptom of another problem — these are the most common causes

Short Journeys

Frequent short trips at low speed prevent the exhaust reaching the temperatures needed for passive regeneration.

Faulty Sensors

Differential pressure sensors, temperature sensors, or exhaust gas sensors sending incorrect data to the ECU.

EGR Valve Issues

A sticking or failed EGR valve recirculates too much exhaust gas, increasing soot production beyond what the DPF can handle.

Worn Injectors

Leaking or poorly atomising injectors produce excess soot that overwhelms the DPF regeneration process.

Wrong Engine Oil

Non-low-SAPS engine oil creates ash that accumulates in the DPF and cannot be burned off during regeneration.

Failed Regeneration

Interrupted active regeneration cycles (turning the engine off mid-regen) leave partially burned soot that hardens in the filter.

Why Just Cleaning Isn’t Enough

Many workshops offer DPF cleaning as a standalone service — they remove the filter, blast it clean, and send you on your way. The problem? The underlying fault that blocked the DPF in the first place is still there.

This means you’ll be back in weeks or months with the same DPF light, the same loss of power, and another bill for cleaning or — worse — a costly DPF replacement.

As accredited DPF Doctor specialists, our approach is different. We diagnose the root cause first, carry out the necessary repairs, and only then perform the DPF clean — giving you a first-time fix that lasts.

Clean Only DPF cleaned without diagnosis. Root cause unfixed. DPF blocks again within weeks. Money wasted.
DPF Doctor Assessment Root cause diagnosed and repaired first. DPF cleaned only if required. First-time fix. Problem solved.

DPF Cleaning FAQs

Common questions about diesel particulate filter problems

How much does a DPF assessment cost?
Contact us for current pricing. A DPF assessment includes a full diagnostic scan, engine data analysis, and identification of all underlying faults. We’ll provide a transparent quote for any repairs needed before any work begins.
Can I just drive faster to clear the DPF?
A sustained motorway drive at higher RPM can sometimes trigger a passive or active regeneration if the DPF is only partially blocked. However, if the DPF light has been on for some time, or the vehicle is in limp mode, a highway drive won’t solve the problem — the underlying fault needs to be diagnosed and repaired first.
Is DPF removal or deletion legal in Australia?
No. Under Australian law, it is illegal to remove, delete, or tamper with a DPF. Vehicles with removed DPFs will fail emissions testing and roadside inspections. We do not offer DPF removal — we diagnose, repair, and clean to restore your DPF to proper working order.
How long does the DPF assessment and clean take?
A diagnostic assessment typically takes 1–2 hours. If repairs and cleaning are required, most vehicles are completed within the same day. More complex cases involving component replacements may require an additional day.
What is a “3-stage in-situ” DPF clean?
In-situ means the DPF is cleaned while still fitted to the vehicle — no removal required. The 3-stage process involves a chemical flush to dissolve soot, a purge cycle to clear debris, and a final verification using engine data to confirm the filter is flowing correctly.
Will my DPF block again after cleaning?
Not if the root cause has been properly diagnosed and repaired. That’s why we follow the DPF Doctor methodology — fix the fault first, then clean the filter. We also provide maintenance advice on driving habits and service intervals to help prevent future issues.
