Mercedes-Benz Service Codes Explained

Your complete guide to ASSYST PLUS service codes — A1, B1, B2, B3, and what they mean for your vehicle

What Is ASSYST PLUS?

ASSYST PLUS (Active Service System) is Mercedes-Benz’s intelligent maintenance computer. Rather than following a fixed service schedule, it continuously monitors your driving habits, engine load, fuel quality, climate conditions, and time elapsed to calculate exactly when each service item is due.

When a service is approaching, your instrument cluster displays a code like “Service A” or “Service B3” along with a countdown. The letter tells you whether it’s a minor (A) or major (B) service, and the number indicates which additional items are due at the same time.

Understanding these codes helps you know exactly what your Mercedes needs — and ensures your service provider carries out every required item.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Mercedes-Benz service codes

What happens if I ignore my service code?
Ignoring a service code means critical maintenance items like oil changes, brake fluid replacement, and filter changes aren’t performed on time. This can lead to accelerated engine wear, reduced braking performance, and potentially costly repairs. It may also affect your warranty coverage and resale value.
Can the service code change before my next service?
Yes. The ASSYST PLUS system continuously recalculates based on your driving conditions. If you drive in particularly harsh conditions (frequent short trips, extreme temperatures, or heavy traffic), the system may bring your service forward or add additional items to the next service.
Will servicing at an independent void my warranty?
No. Under Australian Consumer Law, you can have your vehicle serviced at any qualified workshop without affecting your manufacturer warranty, provided the service is performed to the manufacturer’s specification using approved parts and lubricants. AC Automotive meets all these requirements.
My code has letters after it (like “AK”) — what does that mean?
Some Mercedes-Benz models use letter suffixes instead of numbers. These map to the same underlying service items. Our technicians can read the full workshop code from your instrument cluster and cross-reference it against the Mercedes-Benz service sheets to identify every item that’s due.
